The Striders' Skintones
Nyss Skintones

The past few weeks I was able to finish up my War Chiefs and get an initial sealing on them.   I have a handful of Legion models that need to have snow put on their base before a final sealing but for now on the Legion from I’ve switched gears to work on my Strider models.

Once I got started things progressed pretty quickly.   By now I have my Nyssian skin recipe down and it’s just a matter of going through the steps.   My leathers are pretty much the same recipe as I’ve always used as well but decided to switch it up.   Usually I do my highlighting by lightening the Midnight Blue I use with Dutch Blue eventually with a little white.   This time I went from Midnight Blue to Cape Cod Blue, which is a blue/gray.   The end result was a much more realistic look and I think it turned out well.

The biggest obstacle so far has been the bow arm on the Strider unit attachment officer.   I didn’t like the stock pose so I decided to change it.   But after determining the new position for the arm I realized that the new pose would obscure a lot of the model.   I couldn’t attach the modified arm to the body or I wouldn’t be able to reach a large portion of the model with my brush.   That meant a post-painting assembly which normally isn’t a big deal.   However because I had to sculpt leather straps around the model’s bicep I was going to have to do my greenstuff work around already painted areas.   I’m not overly confident in my greenstuff abilities to begin with but I managed do a passable job.

All in all things are progressing smoothly with my Striders.   My biggest complaint so far is that I’m probably going to have to at least partially repaint my Strider unit to match these models.   My Striders were some of the first Nyss I painted and my skills have improved since then.   The armor of the original unit in particular was done in a different style and while it was functional then IMO it was a lesser quality job than the models I’m painting now.   Other than that the models are painting up smoothly and I’m looking forward to getting them done.

I had really hoped to finish these models by Wednesday when Epic Thagrosh was released but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anymore.   Looks like I’m going to have to find an evening I can just sit down and put brush to metal.

  1. The best picture I could get was the first one in the blog. The re-sculpted area is the are between the black straps on the model’s upper bicep to his elbow. That area (painted brown) is what I sculpted.
